What casts this shadow?

How to play

Shadow is a daily guessing game set in a little shadow-puppet theatre. Somewhere between the lamp and the paper screen hangs an everyday object. You only ever see its shadow. Can you tell what it is?

  1. Look at the shadow on the screen and type what you think casts it. Pick a name from the list; you can't lose a guess to a typo.
  2. A wrong guess, or a skip, swings the lamp to a new angle. The first angles are steep and the shadow is soft; each move sharpens it and turns the object toward its most telling side.
  3. You have 6 guesses. The last angle is straight on.
  4. When the round ends the house lights come up and you see the object itself.

Shadows lie. A mug seen from above is a circle, a fish seen end on is a blob, and a steep lamp stretches everything. Think about what shape the object would need to be to cast that shadow from where the lamp is: the little dial under the screen shows where the lamp is pointing from.

The objects are low-poly 3D models by Kenney (kenney.nl), released into the public domain under CC0.
